my contribution:
On the power and frailty of utopiasHow does one envision the sequel to communist rule in Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union? In this volume, artists, activists, and experts in literary studies, history, political theory discuss the transformation of ideologies and identities in this region.
The contributors reach beyond the discourses of civil society and nationalism, which usually structure our imagination of alternatives, and challenge the simple identities of citizen, consumer, and entrepreneur embedded in the discussion of political options. They consider how the utopia, memory, and monuments of socialism might be transformed after the death of communism and how the Yugoslav War is shaped by the creation and destruction of fantasy; they examine the range of alternative nationalisms in Eastern Europe and the threats to the civil society project as well as how they might be reconstructed.
With contributions by Andrew Arato, Vitaly Komar, Alexander Melamid, Ina Merkel, Edmund Mokrzycki, Mykola Ryabchuk, Renata Salecl, Vladimir Tismaneanu, Konrad Weiss, and others.
The anthology documents selected contributions of the samizdat-magazine KONTEXT - contributions from policy, society, culture. This independent magazine was published first in February 1988 in Berlin. Seven issues and three special editions were printed in the underground, despite strong pressure by the communist party SED and the State Security Service. The number of copies printed was about 1000.
